The Jadro river mouth

The Jadro river mouth

Historical notes say that in the 2nd century BC, Salona was the port of the Delmatae tribe, conveniently located at the intersection of important trade routes, in a quiet and sheltered bay by the mouth of the Jadro. In 119 BC the Delmataes welcomed the army of the Roman proconsul Lucius Caecilius Metellus into their city in a friendly manner, so it is believed that the Italics also lived in Salona at that time, along with the Delmataes and Greek settlers. In 76 BC the Roman Gaius Cosconius conquered the city and from then on, the rise of Salona to the greatest glory, greatness and splendour begun. The soon to be proclaimed Colonia Martia Iulia Salona will become the largest Roman city on the eastern coast of the Adriatic and the metropolis of the Roman province of Dalmatia, which together with its surroundings will reach a figure of approximately 60,000 inhabitants.
