Cement factory
Cement factory
Near the upper course of the river, from the beginning of the 20th century, industrial facilities were built that used the water power of the river for their needs. In 1908, the hydroelectric power plant “Vrilo” was built 170 m downstream from the source for the needs of the nearby cement factory “10. kolovoz” (10th August), and the concrete products factory “Voljak” was also located nearby. Thanks to the adjacent marl quarry, the raw material necessary for the production of natural cement was within reach. A settlement sprung up in the factory area, which was filled with an increasing number of people year by year. This small lively factory settlement created cultural facilities, so in the local community centre one could visit a library, a cinema and a small theatre. The factory in Majdan is not the first in Dalmatia, but it is the longest lasting one. It closed its doors in 2020, after 112 years of existence.
